# 2026-07-23 — Mel-PC QuickBooks connectivity / Q: drive remap (The Prairie Schooner)
## User

- **Requested by:** Winter Williams (@winterguru, via Discord) - tech
- **Role:** automation (acting on the requester's behalf)
- **Also participating:** Howard Enos (@howard9645, via Discord) - tech (diagnosed root cause, applied hand fix)
## Session Summary
Winter reported Mel-PC at The Prairie Schooner could not connect to QuickBooks. Located the
machine via rmm-search: Mel-PC (agent eb2f2aeb-f56e-4fc6-8e5a-73257b95e5f0), online, client
"The Prairie Schooner", site Main. Site inventory showed two servers: TPS-SERVER (offline in
RMM) and TPS-SVR (online, 192.168.1.135) — TPS-SVR is the live QuickBooks host.
Ran full-path diagnostics via RMM. Server side (TPS-SVR): QuickBooksDB34 and QBCFMonitorService
both running, Quickbooks share (C:\Share\Quickbooks) at Everyone/Full, QB firewall allow rules
present, qbdbmgrn listening on dynamic port 63026. Active company file:
C:\Share\Quickbooks\schoonerQB2025.QBW; its .ND file points to ServerIp=192.168.1.135,
ServerPort=63026, EngineName=QB_TPS-SVR_34. Client side (Mel-PC, user TPS\erin, domain-joined
TPS.local, QB Enterprise 24.0 / v34 — matches server engine): DNS resolved, ports 445, 8019,
and 63026 all reachable, Q: mapped to \\TPS-SVR\Quickbooks and listable. QBWin.log showed a
successful company-file open via Q:\schoonerQB2025.QBW at 09:58 AM AZ with only benign warnings
(NetShareGetInfo error 5 — normal for non-admin users).
Howard identified the actual root cause: the QuickBooks drive was NOT mapped on the machine for
user erin (the RMM user_session `net use` check had shown Q: as "OK" — a known unreliable
artifact of agent-injected session checks, per drive-map skill CRITICAL note). Dispatched a
persistent Q: -> \\TPS-SVR\Quickbooks map via the drive-map skill in erin's user session
(completed, exit 0, verified schoonerQB2025.QBW reachable). Howard also mapped it by hand
on-site — same letter/target, no conflict. Issue resolved.
## Key Decisions
- Used drive-map skill (not raw net use dispatch) per skill-first rule — it bakes in the
user_session context, persistence, and verify semantics.
- No stored credential (cmdkey) needed: Mel-PC is domain-joined to TPS.local, so Kerberos
covers share auth.
- Trusted Howard's on-machine observation over the RMM session check that reported the map
as present/OK — RMM-injected session SMB checks are documented as inconsistent in both
directions (drive-map skill, errorlog friction rmm/smb-testing).
- Offered (not executed) a GPO drive map on TPS.local as a self-healing follow-up; Howard
closed the thread without requesting it.
## Problems Encountered
- Inline JSON dispatch with backslash-escaped Windows paths failed RMM body parse
("invalid escape") — switched to jq -n --arg payload building (the documented pattern).
- First Mel-PC diagnostic timed out at 180s: Test-NetConnection against the offline
TPS-SERVER hangs. Re-ran with fast TcpClient checks (2s timeout per port).
- Port scan of standard QB ranges (55333-55378) showed all closed — misleading, because
QuickBooksDB34 was on dynamic port 63026 (read from the .ND file). Lesson: read the .ND
for the real port instead of scanning standard ranges.
- UNC Test-Path/Get-ChildItem through RMM mangled \\TPS-SVR\... into C:\TPS-SVR\... (RMM ->
cmd quote/backslash stripping, memory feedback_windows_quote_stripping) — UNC results via
inline dispatch are unreliable; drive-letter tests (Q:\) worked.
- RMM user_session `net use` showed Q: mapped "OK" while the drive was actually absent for
the user — false positive consistent with the drive-map skill's CRITICAL warning that
agent-injected session checks are not authoritative.
## Configuration Changes
- Mel-PC (The Prairie Schooner): mapped Q: -> \\TPS-SVR\Quickbooks, persistent
(/persistent:yes), in TPS\erin's user session via drive-map skill (cmd 64e0bf38).
Howard also applied the same map by hand on-site. No server-side changes.
- No repo files changed other than this session log.
## Credentials & Secrets
- None accessed or created. RMM API auth via infrastructure/gururmm-server.sops.yaml
(standard rmm-auth.sh flow, vault path only).
## Infrastructure & Servers
- TPS-SVR — 192.168.1.135, Windows, DC for TPS.local, live QuickBooks host.
QuickBooksDB34 + QBCFMonitorService, qbdbmgrn dynamic port 63026, QB browser port 8019.
Shares: Quickbooks (C:\Share\Quickbooks, Everyone/Full), Share, Deployment, TPSBackup.
- TPS-SERVER — legacy server, OFFLINE in RMM (agent 4f8dff0c-b033-4f66-9101-9350e32e0a81).
Watch for stale references (old QB MRU entries, TPSBackup share name suggests it backed up here).
- Mel-PC — agent eb2f2aeb-f56e-4fc6-8e5a-73257b95e5f0, 192.168.1.149, domain-joined
TPS.local, logged-on user TPS\erin. QB Enterprise 24.0 (34.0.4021.3401) + many legacy QB
Enterprise installs (11/14/15/17/18/21). QBWebConnector running.
- Other agents: TPS-JAYMI (online), TPS-Tina (online).
- Company file: \\TPS-SVR\Quickbooks\schoonerQB2025.QBW (plus legacy renamed.QBW).
## Commands & Outputs
- `bash .claude/scripts/rmm-search.sh mel prairie` -> Mel-PC resolved.
- drive-map skill: `drive-map.sh map --host Mel-PC --server '\\TPS-SVR\Quickbooks' --letter Q`
-> completed exit 0, "[OK] mapped Q: -> \\TPS-SVR\Quickbooks" (cmd 64e0bf38).
- `drive-map.sh verify --host Mel-PC --target '\\TPS-SVR\Quickbooks\schoonerQB2025.QBW'`
-> "[OK] reachable" (cmd d3031b83).
- Key diagnostic cmd IDs: 1c06d88f (TPS-SVR services/shares), a03ecc28 (Mel-PC ports),
e2bf83aa (TPS-SVR listener/firewall/ND), 2f41544c (.ND content), 0585aabe (port 63026 test),
1fca8e0e / 76a42208 (user-session share tests), 68accd17 (qbw.ini/MRU), 377a7ab5 / c8f31930
(QBWin.log reads).
- .ND content: ServerIp=192.168.1.135, EngineName=QB_TPS-SVR_34, ServerPort=63026,
FilePath=C:\Share\Quickbooks\schoonerQB2025.QBW.
## Pending / Incomplete Tasks
- Optional follow-up (offered, not requested): GPO drive map for Q: on TPS.local so the
mapping self-heals across reboots/profiles.
- Syncro ticket: offered to Howard, no response before thread closed — NOT logged in Syncro.
- Mel/erin interactive confirmation of QB opening was not explicitly reported back; Howard
closed the thread, implying resolved.
