Discovered: 2026-07-07

Replacing TPS-SERVER (WS2016 Essentials, ThinkServer TS140, 3.8GB RAM, C: 87% full, backup dead since 2018) with TPS-SVR (WS2019 Standard, HPE ProLiant MicroServer Gen10 Plus v2, 32GB RAM, 5.3TB). TPS-SVR promoted as 2nd DC + GC + DNS, replication healthy. Migration PAUSED: decoupled into network swap first, then QB/file move. Pre-seeded data (Quickbooks 144GB + Deployment 22GB) robocopy DONE. FSMO transfer, QB cutover, old DC decom still pending.

  • DNS outage (#86): resolved by network swap. Closed.
  • QuickBooks migration (#84): NEXT. Data pre-seeded (144GB, FAILED=0). Ready to schedule.
  • FSMO transfer + old DC decom (#85): blocked until QB migration confirmed stable.

2026-07-19 status update -- major milestone completed by Howard Enos (on-site)

All primary migration work completed in a single session:

  1. Network swap (#83): CLOSED -- UDM Pro verified online (899/38 Mbps, 0 loss, 16ms latency). SonicWall/USG fully replaced.

  2. DNS outage (#86): CLOSED -- resolved by network swap.

  3. QuickBooks migration (#84): CLOSED -- QB Enterprise 24.0 migrated from TPS-SERVER to TPS-SVR. Final robocopy sync, DBSM service cutover (fixed logon failure), .ND files manually written (old DBSM v18 produced IPv6), GPO drive map created (Q: -> \tps-svr\Quickbooks, Replace action). Verified working on Mel-PC.

  4. AD FSMO transfer: All 5 FSMO roles transferred to TPS-SVR (required adding guru to Schema Admins + Enterprise Admins). Resolved multiple compounding issues blocking GP user policy: static DNS on workstation NICs, stale IPs on TPS-SERVER (10.10.10.5, .120) polluting DNS, TPS-SVR firewall blocking AD traffic (Netlogon rules disabled, Private/Public profiles blocking), missing AD subnet for 192.168.1.0/24, and Mel-PC Netlogon service stopped with Manual startup.

  5. Workstation verification: All 3 active workstations (Mel-PC, TPS-JAYMI, TPS-Tina) verified -- Netlogon running/Automatic, secure channel to TPS-SVR healthy, DC locator finding TPS-SVR.

  6. Old server shutdown: KDC and Netlogon stopped on TPS-SERVER to force workstation failover, then TPS-SERVER shut down via RMM. No active file connections at shutdown. QB data last modified 7/18 (Friday COB) -- no data loss.

Remaining: #85 (formal dcpromo demotion + CA migration + DNS/AD cleanup) -- can proceed once Monday confirms no issues. TPS-SERVER can be powered on if needed as fallback.

Time on-site: ~3 hours (robocopy sync, service cutover, FSMO transfer, GPO creation, firewall/DNS/Netlogon troubleshooting, verification across all workstations)
